  1. The auricles act as collecting chambers for the blood returning to the heart. They have thin walls, because they have to force the blood into the ventricles, that lies just below them. The inner surface of auricles is smooth, but for a network of low ridges, the musculi pectinati, in the region of the auricular appendages.
