Mine is an MN6 serial but the date stamp in the pocket is pieced togeather in May 1997 so you can see how they carry over.. They are good about giving info. I had a 92-93 Telecaster I wanted a mfc. I have a 1995 Tele and they gave me the exact mfc. Thanks for the info guys. It's a traditional poly finished neck as opposed to the satin finish necks I've seen on MIM's for the last decade at least. Just got a cool email from Bob Willocks of Fender Consumer Relations. He also said the MN1 serial number decals were used for 1991 and into the beginning months of 1992. The MIM's of today are Poplar and the necks are satin finished. I think by 2004 the non ash, non mahogany MIM bodies were all alder. I mean, all popular models - there could be some stragglers on some models that use a different cut of body. I go on the neck pocket date and the heel date of the guitar. Here's the pattern I see. A serial number can and regularly does suggest the guitar is from the following or more often the previous year - when they assign serial numbers too optimistically and then don't make those guitars until later because the demand wasn't there. If you wanna see serial numbers and neck dates wildly out of whack, go check out G + L. Sometimes I think they find necks with numbers on them under a table they forgot about. The Fender rep said in his email that the early MIM's were Alder and that they were switched to Poplar later. He didn't specify when. As you can see below, it says that MIM's had Alder bodies until 2001 when they were switched to Poplar in 2002. Okay, looks good until... Many online sources say the bodies are now back to Alder see most online retailers descriptions of MIM Strat's and that the switch was made in 2006 when Fender upgraded the MIM's with heavier bridge blocks, new logo's and necks. Checking online just now there's reference to another 2009 upgrade so I checked my 2009 Fender Frontline catalog. The catalog doesn't list the body wood lame but as I mentioned all the major guitar retailers Guitar Center. So in my opinion, you can safely say that from 1991 to 2001, MIM Strat's were made with Alder. From 2002 to 2005, they were made with Poplar. The new 50's and 60's Road worn's are Alder as well. This is all good trivia but as far as body woods the alder and poplar are VERY close sonically so I wood say a moot point. That's all I wood have to say on the subject.
