  1. A Plagued Journey
  2. There is no warning rattle at the door
  3. nor heavy feet to stomp the foyer boards.
  4. Safe in the dark prison, I know that
  5. light slides over
  6. the fingered work of a toothless
  7. woman in Pakistan.
  8. Happy prints of
  9. an invisible time are illumined.
  10. My mouth agape
  11. rejects the solid air and
  12. lungs hold. The invader takes
  13. direction and
  14. seeps through the plaster walls.
  15. It is at my chamber, entering
  16. the keyhole, pushing
  17. through the padding of the door.
  18. I cannot scream. A bone
  19. of fear clogs my throat.
  20. It is upon me. It is
  21. sunrise, with Hope
  22. its arrogant rider.
  23. My mind, formerly quiescent
  24. in its snug encasement, is strained
  25. to look upon their rapturous visages,
  26. to let them enter even into me.
  27. I am forced
  28. outside myself to
  29. mount the light and ride joined with Hope.
  30. Through all the bright hours
  31. I cling to expectation, until
  32. darkness comes to reclaim me
  33. as its own. Hope fades, day is gone
  34. into its irredeemable place
  35. and I am thrown back into the familiar
  36. bonds of disconsolation.
  37. Gloom crawls around
  38. lapping lasciviously
  39. between my toes, at my ankles,
  40. and it sucks the strands of my
  41. hair. It forgives my heady
  42. fling with Hope. I am
  43. joined again into its
  44. greedy arms.
