Due to no fault of many people, they are often faced with no option but to eat so late at night. Reasons for this often stem from the nature of their work which means they don't get home early enough, and as a result, have to eat so late at night. Many of such people often don't have the luxury of allowing the ingested food to digest before they sleep.

This has several effects on health such as the increased risk for obesity, acid reflux, disrupted sleep and in some cases, indigestion. However, while many people know the types of foods they should not have as their first meal of the day, many are not aware that certain foods are not also meant to be eaten late at night, especially close to bedtime.
This article, therefore, would be looking at four (4) foods you should not eat late at night, as well as their health implications on the body when consumed so late at night. The foods are described below:
1. Starchy foods
Starchy foods, especially the likes of potatoes, pasta, and rice are best avoided as dinner for late-night eaters as these foods often metabolise or get broken down to form sugar, which causes a spike in blood sugar and insulin. With the body at rest at night and not doing any work, the sugar would not be burned for energy, but instead stored as fat, leading to obesity.
2. Spicy foods
While you may crave spicy foods, you should limit their consumption to much earlier periods in the day due to the effects they have when consumed so late at night. They are capable of causing heartburn, especially when you would sleep very soon after consuming spicy foods. Spicy foods can also irritate the bladder and make you wake up to urinate more.
3. Simple carbohydrates
Foods such as cakes, pizzas, sodas, raw sugar, fruit juices, bread, and most breakfast cereals should also be avoided at night because of their high glycemic index which means they get absorbed into the bloodstream quickly. With your body not doing so much at night, the sugar would be stored as fat in your body, making you add weight.
4. Greasy foods
You also should avoid greasy foods at night due to some of the negative effects they have on the body. They should not be eaten at night because they are hard to digest and could make gastrointestinal health worse. Increased intake of greasy foods should also be avoided because of their trans fat content which can affect your heart. Thus, watch your intake of foods with too much vegetable and palm oil content.
