  1. onderful is the work which the Lord designs to
  2. accomplish through His church, that His name may be
  3. glorified. A picture of this work is given in Ezekiel’s vision
  4. of the river of healing: “These waters issue out toward the
  5. east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the
  6. sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall
  7. be healed. And it shall come to pass, that everything that
  8. liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come,
  9. shall live:... and by the river upon the bank thereof, on this
  10. side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf
  11. shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it
  12. shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because
  13. their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit
  14. thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”
  15. Ezekiel 47:8-12.
  16. From the beginning God has wrought through His people
  17. to bring blessing to the world. To the ancient Egyptian nation
  18. God made Joseph a fountain of life. Through the integrity
  19. of Joseph the life of that whole people was preserved.
  20. Through Daniel God saved the life of all the wise men
  21. of Babylon. And these deliverances are as object lessons;
  22. they illustrate the spiritual blessings offered to the world
  23. through connection with the God whom Joseph and Daniel
  24. worshiped. Everyone in whose heart Christ abides, everyone
  25. who will show forth His love to the world, is a worker
  26. together with God for the blessing of humanity. As he
  27. receives from the Saviour grace to impart to others, from his
  28. whole being flows forth the tide of spiritual life.

  30. God chose Israel to reveal His character to men. He
  31. desired them to be as wells of salvation in the world. To
  32. them were committed the oracles of heaven, the revelation
  33. of God’s will. In the early days of Israel the nations of the
  34. world, through corrupt practices, had lost the knowledge of
  35. God. They had once known Him; but because “they glorified
  36. Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain
  37. in their imaginations, ... their foolish heart was darkened.”
  38. Romans 1:21. Yet in His mercy God did not blot them out of
  39. existence. He purposed to give them an opportunity of again
  40. becoming acquainted with Him through His chosen people.
  41. Through the teachings of the sacrificial service, Christ was
  42. to be uplifted before all nations, and all who would look to
  43. Him should live. Christ was the foundation of the Jewish
  44. economy. The whole system of types and symbols was a
  45. compacted prophecy of the gospel, a presentation in which
  46. were bound up the promises of redemption.
  47. But the people of Israel lost sight of their high privileges
  48. as God’s representatives. They forgot God and failed to fulfill
  49. their holy mission. The blessings they received brought no
  50. blessing to the world. All their advantages they appropriated
  51. for their own glorification. They shut themselves away from
  52. the world in order to escape temptation. The restrictions that
  53. God had placed upon their association with idolaters as a
  54. means of preventing them from conforming to the practices

  56. of the heathen, they used to build up a wall
