The state of Florida was the first part of the continental United States to be visited by Europeans. The Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon gave the state its name which means “flowery land”. No matter where you are in the state of Florida, you are never more than 60 miles (96.5 kms) from the nearest body of salt water.
