Managed vs Unmanaged VPS
I'm looking to get a server to host some of my client's websites (mostly well optimized Wordpress sites and some static html sites, almost all of which are low traffic landing sites, like <1000 views a month).

I want to have the sites load quickly and be secure so that my clients have a good experience. I know my way around cPanel and WHM very well and while I'm an Obj-C dev, I have very little interest in getting too involved in learning the linux command line.
I picked up a managed VPS from A2 Hosting (4cpu 4gb RAM) for $60 a month, but I realized that many of the things I wanted to do were "restricted" such as disabling old versions of PHP and updating cPanel to the latest version. My question is, for the same price I could get an unmanaged VPS (4cpu 2gb RAM) with my own cPanel license and throw in LiteSpeed (I love their Wordpress caching implementation), but should I?
I am comfortable keeping Wordpress, my plugins, and WHM/cPanel up to date and in not installing malicious software myself, but I'm not confident in my abilities to "secure" the server and troubleshoot things if something were to go horribly wrong. Do you think the basic support that a hosting company supplies (in this case A2 Hosting) would suffice, or should I stick with the managed VPS? Am I overpaying for management that I can mostly do myself?
I know that's a lot, but thanks in advanced for anyone who take the time to give their opinion,

I don't know what VPS servers are running these days pricewise but there are a lot more things involved in managing a server than updating cPanel and Wordpress. You can learn a lot of those things reading tutorials online and copying/pasting the commands but chances are when something goes wrong you will not know how to fix it and will end up having a server and all it's sites down while you go searching for a sysadmin to hire that you can trust and won't do a spotty job.
If you do pull the trigger just get a decent server management guy to call on that will be available quickly if you need them. Either way good luck
We get this a lot customers are certain they can manage a VPS on their own to save money so they purchase unmanaged and them create support tickets and expect fully managed support and not pay for it. Just be for warned if you purchase and unmanaged VPS then that is what you should expect. Some times its hard to move from an unmanned to a fully managed server after its setup due to the hosts requirements.
Most hosts have a small disclaimer or description of what is included with an umanaged VPS vs a fully managed server you should look for this information or ask for it.

That does not sound right. To confirm, A2's server management wont update cpanel and they want to keep old versions of PHP active? If so, what was their reasoning?
Also, you need to think of other items that management gives such as backups, monitoring and response, and general troubleshooting. If you do go unmanaged, indeed find a server admin company or freelanacer that is responsive to help when issues hit the fan. Just remember that admin may charge per hour.

No, not at all. A2 Has been a great host so far, it's just that their managed VPS without root access has cPanel version 70 preinstalled and you don't have the ability to update to version 76 (or any other) yourself (my guess is it makes managing servers easier on their part). Their Core VPS (which has root access) lets you update yourself, which is likely what I'm going to go with.
And in terms of PHP, their default is 7.0.x, but I prefer 7.2.x and they require a ticket to be made to change the default version. Again, I believe this is unnecessary on their managed VPS with root access.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with a managed VPS from A2, just with root access so I get a bit more control. Thanks for the input though!

Hey CassioGreene,
Thank you for hosting with us, I'm happy to hear you're satisfied overall with the services provided
Just to confirm some of your thoughts here, it is correct that we do have two managed VPS services, the Managed VPS line you're on without root access and a core managed VPS which includes full root access.
With the core product line you'll be able to make all the changes you've mentioned in this post including updating cPanel, enabling/disabling PHP versions, selecting default PHP version etc. Of course if it is ever needed we'd also be on hand to assist in some of these changes via ticket on the core product line.
If you'd like to switch from the managed to a core VPS you can submit a ticket and we can make that change for you and there shouldn't be a server migration necessary.
Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions or concerns

Hi Cassio,
As part of maintenance, your provider should be regularly auditing your VPS and keeping software up-to-date, amongst other things.
If you're not confident being the system administrator of your VPS, definitely stay with your current host. A lot of work is done behind-the-scenes. What you're currently paying is very reasonable IMO :-)
Hope that helps!
