  1. Like primitives we buried the cat
  2. with his bowl. Bare-handed
  3. we scraped sand and gravel
  4. back into the hole.
  5. They fell with a hiss
  6. and thud on his side,
  7. on his long red fur, the white feathers
  8. between his toes, and his
  9. long, not to say aquiline, nose.
  10. We stood and brushed each other off.
  11. There are sorrows keener than these.
  12. Silent the rest of the day, we worked,
  13. ate, stared, and slept. It stormed
  14. all night; now it clears, and a robin
  15. burbles from a dripping bush
  16. like the neighbor who means well
  17. but always says the wrong thing.
