  2. ACUTE EXPOSURE AND LEVELS OF RADIATION SICKNESSES
  3. ____________________________________________________________________________
  4. EXPOSURE RANGE TYPE OF INJURY PROBABLE MORTALITY RATE
  5. (ROENTGENS) WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF EXPOSURE
  6. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  7. 000-050 NONE SEEN NONE
  8. 050-200 LEVEL I SICKNESS 5 PERCENT OR LESS
  9. 200-450 LEVEL II SICKNESS 50 PERCENT OR LESS
  10. 450-600 LEVEL III SICKNESS 50 PERCENT OR MORE
  11. 600-PLUS LEVEL IV AND V 100 PERCENT
  12. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  13. EXPLANATIONS OF SICKNESS LEVELS FOR SINGLE DOSE
  14. ___________________________________________________________________________
  15. LEVEL I - Less than half the persons exposed will vomit within 24 hours.
  16. There are either no subsequent symptoms or, at most, only
  17. increased fatigue. Less than 5 percent will require medical
  18. care for radiation injury. Others can perform their customary
  19. tasks. Deaths that occur are caused by complications such as
  20. blast and thermal injuries or infections and disease.
  21. LEVEL II - More that half the persons exposed will vomit soon after
  22. exposure and will be ill for several days. This will be
  23. followed by a period of one to three weeks when there are
  24. few or no symptoms. At the end of this latent period loss
  25. of hair will be seen in more than half followed by a moderately
  26. severe illness due primarily to the damage to the blood
  27. forming organs. More than half will survive with the chances
  28. of survival being better for those who received the smaller
  29. doses.
  30. LEVEL III - This is a more serious version of Level II sickness. The
  31. initial period of illness is longer, the latent period shorter,
  32. and the ensuing illness is characterized by extensive
  33. hemorrhages and complicating infections. Less than half
  34. will survive.
  35. LEVEL IV - This is an accelerated version of Level III sickness. All in
  36. the group will begin to vomit soon after exposure and this
  37. will continue for several days or until death, which occurs
  38. before the end of the second week, and usually before the
  39. appearance of hemorrhages or loss of hair.
  40. LEVEL V - This is an extremely severe illness in which damage to the
  41. brain and nervous system predominates. Symptoms, signs and
  42. rapid prostration come on almost as soon as the dose has been
  43. received. Death occurs in a few hours or a few days. Illness
  44. of this type would involve exposure to gamma radiation in
  45. excess of several thousand roentgens.
  46. _______________________________________________________________________________
  47. PERSONAL DECONTAMINATION - AFTER THE EXPOSURE
  48. ___________________________________________________________________________
  49. PERSONAL DECONTAMINATION SHOULD NOT BE NEEDED IF THE RADIATION SOURCE IS A
  50. SAMPLE OF SOIL, OR ANY OTHER OBJECT. MONITOR THE EXPOSURE RATE AND DO NOT
  51. EXCEED 5 R/hr. IF THE RADIATION LEVEL IS IN THIS RANGE, LEAVE THE AREA AS
  52. IT WILL BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH TO REMAIN IN THE VICINITY. IF YOU
  53. HAPPEN TO GET CONTAMINATED, WASH OR WIPE CONTAMINATION OFF YOUR PERSON
  54. AS SOON AS YOU CAN. RADIATION IS NOT...CONTAGIOUS! IT CAN HOWEVER BE
  55. TRANSMITTED BETWEEN PARTIES THAT DO NOT OBSERVE CAUTION IN HOW THEY ARE
  56. HANDLING A RADIOACTIVE SAMPLE.

  61. 1. IF YOU ENCOUNTER A PERSON WHO
  62. HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO RADIATION,
  63. YOU WILL NOT GET RADIATION
  64. SICKNESS FROM THAT INDIVIDUAL
  65. UNLESS HE/SHE STILL HAS THE
  66. CONTAMINATION ON HIM/HER.

  68. TYPES OF RADIATION HAZARDS
  69. ____________________________________
  70. ALPHA - IT CAN PENETRATE ONLY THE
  71. EPIDERMAL LAYER OF SKIN. IT
  72. IS PRIMARILY ONLY AN
  73. INTERNAL RADIATION HAZARD.
  74. BETA - IT CAN PENETRATE THE SKIN
  75. AND MAY CAUSE SEVERE SKIN
  76. AND TISSUE DAMAGE. IT IS
  77. AN INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL
  78. HAZARD.
  79. GAMMA - IT IS IDENTICAL WITH AN
  80. X-RAY OF HIGH ENERGY. IT
  81. CAN PENETRATE DENSE MATERIAL
  82. AND IS A SERIOUS HAZARD...

  84. DETERMINING RADIATION LEVELS AT A LANDING SITE
  85. The following equation is used for determining the level of radiation at
  86. a source with an estimated distance and a Geiger Counter reading at your
  87. location.
  88. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  89. DR(s) = D(squared) X DR(x) where DR(s) is the dose rate at the source,
  90. where D(squared) is the distance from the
  91. source squared,
  92. where DR(x) is the Geiger Counter reading at
  93. your location. Or in simple terms...
  94. Distance (Squared) times Dose Rate (at your location) = Dose Rate at
  95. the Source divided by 1000.
  96. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  97. Example: You take a reading with your Geiger Counter (CDV-700 Model) and
  98. you get 20 mr/hr.
  99. You then estimate the distance to the Source of the radiation as
  100. being about 30 feet. This distance squared is 900.
  101. 20 mr/hr times 900 and get 18000, divide this by 1000 and get
  102. a dose rate at the source of 18 R/hr.
  103. NOTE! If you get a reading of over 5 R/hr or more, do not enter
  104. the area as it will...be hazardous to your health!
  105. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  106. UNDERSTANDING THE READINGS ON THE GEIGER COUNTER
  107. ___________________________________________________________________________
  108. For the purpose of explaining the readings you may get on a Geiger Counter,
  109. we have chosen to explain the meter on a standard Civil Defense Model
  110. CDV-700 which will measure radiation in the 0-50 milliroentgen range.
  111. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  112. The meter on the CDV-700 has incremented readings of:
  113. .1
  114. .2
  115. .3
  116. .4
  117. .5
  118. The meter also has a select knob for either (X1), (X10), or (X100).
  119. If you had the knob turned to (X10) and received a reading of say, .2 on
  120. the meter, you would be getting 2 milliroentgens per hour. If the same
  121. reading were received and the knob was set to (X100), then the reading
  122. would actually be 20 milliroentgens per hour.
  123. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  124. Note: 1 Roentgen = 1000 milliroentgens.
  125. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  126. Other types of Standard Geiger Counters...
  127. CDV-700 Reads 0-050 milliroentgens per hour.
  128. CDV-715 Reads 0-500 roentgens per hour.
  129. CDV-742 Reads 0-200 roentgens per hour, this is a dosimeter that will
  130. fit into your pocket.
  131. CDV-750 This is the charging unit for the CDV-742 and other models of
  132. dosimeters.
  133. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  134. CALCULATING PERSONAL RADIATION EXPOSURE LEVELS
  135. ___________________________________________________________________________
  136. There are two easy ways to determine your total exposure to radiation.
  137. They are #1 - Dosimeter Readings, or
  138. #2 - Geiger Counter Readings
  139. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  140. Notes: First visible injuries will occur after you have received a dose of
  141. approximately 280 R/hr.
  142. The maximum allowable dose that may be received, and still allow
  143. you to live, is 200 R/hr in a two week period.
  144. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  145. Total Exposure - Personal Calculations:
  146. Method #1 - Dosimeter reading:
  147. If your Dosimeter reads 10 mr/hr after 2 hours of investigating
  148. the landing sight, then your personal exposure is...10 mr/hr.
  149. Method #2 - Geiger Counter Readings:
  150. Taken after 1 Hour: 05 R/hr
  151. Taken after 2 Hours: 30 R/hr
  152. Taken after 3 Hours: 31 R/hr
  153. Your Total Exposure would be 66 R/hr. You will at this point
  154. have entered the first danger zone and may experience Level I
  155. Sickness. See (S2) for explanations of sickness levels.
  156. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  158. * THE COMPUFON NETWORK - DETERMINING DECAY RATE FOR RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS *
  159. ***************************************************************************
  160. There are many complicated methods for determining the decay rate for
  161. Radioactive materials. We have used only one here as it is about as safe
  162. and simple as we can get without getting too complicated and technical.
  163. If you desire to have some of the other methods explained, please send me
  164. your name / address and your interests, and I'll help you out. Thanks!
  165. Mike Hart - State of Washington - Radiological Defense Officer
  166. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  167. Method #1 - The 7-10 Rule:
  168. Time: Decay: R/hr:
  169. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  170. First Hour (H1) Not applicable 1000
  171. Seventh Hour (H7) 1 tenth of H1 100
  172. Fourty-ninth Hour 1 tenth of H7 10
  173. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  174. Note: Remember that if the R/hr reading is near or over 5 R/hr, Do Not
  175. enter the area due to the hazards of possible injury.
