Seriously, your suggestion are web 2.0, blog comments and getting edu links?!! Edu links helps just as a normal link there is nothing special about them. And the other two are just obsolete.

And powerful directories are a misleading term. If you do put good content in the paid directory sites then yeah sure you will earn some good links which will help you in return.

Say, if you ask your friend (or a co-worker) to bought a domain and build a site under his or her name. Then after building some authority in your niche (say by producing 20 high valued articles which are shared through different mediums & are also getting ranked) the site link back to your site with the most relevant anchor text through content and from the relevant host page it links to the article of yours which is just producing the content exactly as the anchor text is referring to. Then how on Earth google is going to penalize you for that?
You are not owning the host site, according to Google you are not producing content for it (because how Google should know that you are providing the content to your friend). Your main site is just being referred in the most natural way. And also not to mention you can say you are guest posting and put a link in your author's bio paragraph anyway.

I am not going to argue or debate with this. I just stated what I think. Sure your way, is the organic way which will take time. Or, otherwise :)

And if you don't know which one directories is good for your business then just figure out your competitors who rank first on GOOGLE and watch which one site they used through seo tools:like. ahref & serpstate

Off-Page SEO is very important to get good traffic and branding. Here I am following a few tips.
1. Using 10 Social bookmarking sites only
2. Guest posting
3. Creating Web 2.0 sites and placing the link with a proper anchor text (it shouldn't be the focus keyword of the link)
4. Create a presentation by using the post content. convert the presentation into a video with royalty free music. Then submit this video to video hosting sites.
5. Submit the PPT to PDF directories.
5. Submission to Blog directories (this is not working these days)
6. Email Signature is working
7. Pick 5 best forums and active there.
These are working OFF-Page methods. Personally, I am working with these simple methods for my branding and conversions.
For better results, On-Page SEO is very important.
