Colored people is a term that many people find offensive, and I can't help but agree. When any person is referring to a particular ethnic group they have to either risk being politically incorrect or sounding strange. Saying "african-american" isn't always accurate, there are plenty of dark skinned people from other continents than Africa. So I suppose settling on "black" would only be as offensive as calling a Caucasian person "white".
