  1. Nowadays we take it for
  2. granted that women have the same rights as men before the first world war few people believed this.
  3. As
  4. far as work was concerned there were jobs wich were regarded as women`s
  5. jobs and other wiche were regarded as men`s jobs. Women`s jobs were
  6. generally lower paid as men`s. Men did almost all the heavy jobs in
  7. industry or in transport.
  8. Women had jobs like dress-making,cleanning or worked as servants.
  9. Women`s
  10. main role was as being to raise childeren and look for their home.
  11. Women were not expected to take position of leaderschip. Women were not
  12. even allowed to vote in elections.
  13. Before the war some women had
  14. been struggling to achieve greater equality with men. The most famous of
  15. these had been the suffragettes who stagged a violent campaign against
  16. the govervment from 1905 to 1914 trying to achieve the right to
  17. vote.however, at the outbreak of war, the were still no near to success.
  18. Many men argued that women were unsuited to such responsibility that
  19. women could not be trusted to vote sensibly that women should not
  20. concern themselves with such male activities and voting.
