From churn and burn content sites on google, pdf’s on Amazon right through to today’s Social Media Influencers. I have tried it all, with varying degrees of success.
IM meant I could even retire in my early 30’s. But then only to come back. First I was a bit bored traveling, there are only so many beaches you can lie on. Then in 2008 I lost a shit load of money in the banking crash. As anyone who is married will know, that means I was commanded to go and make back the money.
When you start to get old, you start to reflect. I have now made my money back and we have a very nice lifestyle. So I thought I would give something back. The question is what?
The biggest question I see/am asked by people revolves around how they can be an influencer and best monetize their social media accounts.
The key is to remember Social Media is just modern day publishing, so you can use the same tricks publishers used.
1. It is publishing; you have to have quality content, just like you would if it was a magazine. Otherwise people are not interested. Like a magazine, pick a niche and post interesting, good quality content.
2. People like things to be fresh, more so now than ever. Try to post quality content 1x per day. Why do you think people bought newspapers everyday, not for yesterdays news or last weeks sports results?
3. It is only worth monetizing when you have a decent amount of followers. If you are just starting out get the crappist, yes, including buying them, followers, just so it looks like your new account has some people interested in it. If you are following less than are following you, then you look like a bit of an authority. Fake it till you can make it – then delete the crap followers and watch your engagement levels rise. How do you think records used to get to #1? The record companies bought their own records!
4. The key to monetization is engagement. You cannot really automate that. The closest you can do is the parent / child method. You can also buy shoutouts from other relevant influencers. All record sales could not be counted. To get a record to #1 there were actually certain key shops whose record sales they counted. Guess which shops record companies chose to promote / buy their own records?
5. The money is in sponsorship and advertising, not in $20 shoutouts. So make yourself appealing to advertisers and sponsors, with your engagement level. Almost every successful print publication I worked on made its money before it sold a single copy. Why? Ad revenue, the purchase price was simply to recoup publishing costs and give the shops that stocked it some profit.
If you are already doing those things, then you are well on the way to being a successful influencer.
If you have any questions related to growing / monetizing your social media account feel free to ask them and I will do my best to answer.
Nice tips to keep in mind on my IG journey. Thanks!! :)

This is actually great advice.
Tie's in a little with something I am about to write, for the board.
With working in publishing you probably had a team who would prepare and look for the latest news to keep things fresh.
What advice would you give to somebody, like myself, who would like to find new fresh news to keep a lifestyle blog up to date without having the ability to scour the web and world every hour of every day?
Some golden points OP and love your posts as always!
I dont like the point of buying followers and then removing them later.
That thing is very hard
Rent & Earn Money with your Amazon Seller Account - Get Details here
Long Awaited Amazon Guide - Make Hell Lot of Money Selling over Amazon
Amazon Guide & Journey to 100K a month & over?

No it is not, just block them later down the line, indeed do that with all followers who are not engaging with you. Once you have a sufficient following, it all becomes about quality of follower and that is measured by their engagement level. Until you are at that point you don't really have a choice other than to fake it.

You are correct back in the old days we had teams of researchers and journalists, but to be fair we didn't have the internet and were publishing hundreds of articles for print. Now I have the internet and am looking at 1 post per day per niche, not hundreds, I don't need a team.
Obviously you want to immerse yourself in all the relevant influencers / websites / publications relevant to your niche. I have also used google trends, buzz sumo etc. But if there is one place to start to find the latest trends for most niches it is reddit. Join all the relevant sub-reddits there. Remember you are just looking for 1 good quality item per day per niche to post about and it usually appears on reddit first.
I actually wouldn't mind reading some more from you about this :) I mean, being an influencer.
It could be really useful to me, personally and, I believe lots of people here in BHW. But still, thanks for this!
This is not really a method
So you do all that i list then?

Hello GringoMonkey,
great & very useful advice, thank you so much!
In another thread i saw you're also an influencer agency and i wanted to see if you're taking on new influencers?
I have a 42k pet account, creating my own content. So far i haven't been successful in monetizing the account & from what i see only very few in my niche are.
We're offered tons of collaborations (post for product) and recently became brand ambassadors for 2 luxury pet fashion designers.
Since IG became more than a little hobby time wise, i would love to at least make a little from it & see how i could take it to the next level.
I've refrained from signing up with another pet influencer agency who asked us for various reasons but i would really appreciate your advice & response!

Thanks for the opportunity, really.
I enjoyed reading and got kinda motivated so that's why I said it would be cool to read more from you since you did it well, you are quite good at writing and teaching as well, I guess. :)

Under bhw rules I am not allowed to cross promote my other threads. Contribute to the forum and when you have 15 posts send me a private message with your ig pet account details, i will take a look and see if there is anything i can do to help you.

I am glad this thread has motivated you. Now you just have to go and do it. Being successful as an influencer is not difficult but it does require a daily discipline. Remember first add value, then look to monetize.

Thanks for your effort, truly :) Hope you share some more of your knowledge in the future as well!
Great advice. At what followers figure do you think it's time to start monetizing?

In my observation, good genetics seem to be fairly helpful too.

LOL do you mean if they are good looking? Because that depends on the niche.

I think good genetics are transferrable across all niches
Child/fan for Facebook account?
That is something new
What are those papers/magazines you worked for?
Thanks for sharing. I like this kind of more generic methods than those which are almost like spoon feeding step by step guides.
What are those papers/magazines you worked for?
I am from the uk so they were based here.
One was myatt mcfarlane publishing and another the sport newspaper group.
I dont think they are around in the same stucture anymore, the whole publishing industry changed with the internet, thats one of the reasons why i got out.
