  1. The mother of a 16-year-old girl from Hyderabad has lodged a police complaint accusing her husband of marrying her off to a 65-year-old sheikh from Oman and sought help to bring her back. Saiyeeda Shaikh, a resident of Nawab Kunta area, said that her daughter told her over phone on Wednesday that she was not liking it there and wanted to return.
  2. The woman has stated that her husband married off their daughter without her knowledge. She has said that Sikander, her husband, took the girl to his sister Ghousia’ house for a few days.
  3. “At her house, my husband and his sister hatched the plan to marry off my daughter to the Oman sheikh Ahmed. The sheikh paid Rs 5 lakh to my husband. They kept me in the dark and secretly got her married in a function hall. They stayed for four days in a hotel and then he dropped her off at Ghousia’s house until her passport and visa was done. Then, she too flew to Oman,’’ she stated in her complaint.
  4. She said she had spoken to the sheikh over the phone and he had told her that he “bought’’ her daughter by paying Rs 5 lakh to Sikander.
  5. “My husband convinced my daughter to marry the sheikh by showing videos of luxurious lifestyle in his villa in Oman. I did not want my daughter to get married so early. Now she does not want to stay there,’’ she said.
  6. However, police are not convinced. “She (Saiyeeda) and her husband live separately, but it is not possible that she did not know about her daughter’s marriage. Her daughter was away at her aunt’s house for nearly three months before getting married. We have called her husband and sister-in-law for an inquiry. We are looking for the qazi who performed the marriage illegally,’’ ACP Mohammed Tajuddin said.
  7. Police sources have said that it appeared that a dispute between Sikander and Saiyeeda over the sharing of money prompted her to lodge the complaint.
