  1. What do I need to create my own VPS hosting?
  2. Maybe this question was answered here already, but I did not found a link to the proper topic. So, down to my question: I would like to buy a 2-processor motherboard, RAM and make a tiny VPS-hosting using Xen.

  10. Can you please provide me with the useful links where I can read more about it? For example, I don`t understand, how to assign IP-adderesses to the VPN`s that I will create on the server, where to get these addresses and so on.
  11. Thank you.
  12. I think in this situation it's better you start with a vps reseller account and a good partner
  13. Thanks for advice but unfortunetely it is not an option for me. I need (and want) to create it by myself.
  14. What is your budget and what location do you want to host your server in?
  15. If you want to keep costs down then you should consider something like SolusVM for building VMs.
  16. I also recommend using KVM over XEN, xen is a bit old now and KVM is much faster! I moved 800+ VMs from XEN to KVM during 2018 and it was worth it as its much faster.

  20. Thank you.
  21. you can buy a dedicated server install virualiztion tools e.g virtualizor.
  22. using virtualization you can create multiple vps and sell own your prices.
  23. or become a partnet of company.

  26. What is your budget
  27. About 2-3 thousand dollars, not much.
  28. what location do you want to host your server in?
  29. For the first time at home (sounds funny, I know) - I have 100 megabit Ethernet connection and possibility to increase up to 1000.
  30. If you want to keep costs down then you should consider something like SolusVM for building VMs.
  31. Never heard of it. Will read, thank you.

  33. Honestly saying, I would like to use not the fastest one, but:
  34. the most secure one
  35. the best documented one
  36. the most stable one
  37. with the biggest community
  38. Here you go
  39. Thank you.
  40. If you are hosting at home, how many IPs do you have? Each VM will need 1 IPv4
  41. Hi
  42. If you are hosting at home, how many IPs do you have?
  43. I`m not hosting now, I`m planning to do it. No IP`s at the moment.
  44. Each VM will need 1 IPv4
  45. I understand, will buy them later.

  47. I understand, will buy them later.
  48. Are you planning to use the VMs for your personal usage? If not, then you would rather colocate it in a data center.
  49. There are many hypervisors. I used Proxmox for a while. It has a good control panel, good documentation, performance is excellent... it has multiple types of VMs it can create depending on the isolation level you want.
  50. The main issue is to get as many IP addresses as you need. If you find a data center that gives you 2 or 3 IPs with a server, it's not going to work.

  54. I'm assuming you plan on selling services here.
  55. Most residential ISPs have terms of service that prevent you from providing web hosting. Have you looked into this?
  56. You can't start hosting with only 1 server available. Servers have hardware issues, what happens if one of your server's components die? All your hosting customers will be offline until you can have a replacement purchased, shipped, and installed?
  57. What about backup power? If your home loses power, do you have a generator on-site?

  65. I`m not planning to sell services ( at least, at the first time ) I want to do it as an experiment, to get knowledge, skills, understanding and so on.
  66. As far as I understand now, the steps must be as follows: learn about Linux networking, learn how to use Xen ( or any other hypervisor ), then buy IP block and connect these IPs with the VPS`s created.

  71. This is not 100% true. If you use the default configuration files for each VM, then yes KVM is faster. But if you tweak your configuration files, you can make XEN in PVHVM mode about 20% faster then even the best tweaked KVM setup. We use both and both have their place in the market and offerings.

  76. Try Virtualizor. Well Documented and Pretty Good support. In our Case it's better than SolusVM.

  85. Well. I guess paying a very few Bucks to Test Everything with "Virtualizor" is not a Waste. They offer 3 Days Trial for their License. I guess that's enough. Else they change very Low Fees for their License.

  91. That's the spirit! I am doing the same thing right now, although I am having trubble finding a good colocation.
  92. For the first time at home (sounds funny, I know) - I have 100 megabit Ethernet connection and possibility to increase up to 1000.
  93. If you're planning to sell from home, you're not going to be able to offer any meaningful DDOS protection, and you're probably going to find your servers taken down a lot. Plus, leasing IPs from your personal ISP is exponentially more expensive than from a datacenter.
  94. A great way to start is to use a public cloud solution like AWS or Digital Ocean or Google cloud for example.
  95. That way you would not have to buy the actual hardware and you can just pay as you go.
  96. The tricky part would be getting your first customers but this is a standard thing for any business. You can use google ads and going over and beyond for your customers at least in the beginning.

  100. I wholeheartedly disagree with this. You're going to want as few middle men as possible or your pricing is never going to be competitive. If you don't want to invest in the hardware up front, that's fine - you can lease dedicated bare metal servers. But ask yourself - why would anyone pay you when they can pay AWS, Digital Ocean, or Google Cloud to get what you're giving them - without your markup. Anyone worth their weight can use a "who is" to figure out where their service is coming from. If you want to sell VPSs - use a bare metal solution you have full control over, whether that be personally owned or leased. Just my opinion.
  101. Don't get offended but I think your understanding in the topic is limited. Not everyone who needs a VPS is a tech savvy and can deal with an unmanaged server from Digital ocean for example. There is a huge number of companies that offer managed servers based on any of the public cloud platforms.

  103. He wants to sell them - the point of that is to make a profit. You're giving bad advice to add yet another layer between him and the customer. Also, did you read the original post or just the last one? He doesn't want a VPS. He wants to SELL them - don't get offended, but I think your understanding in the topic is limited.
