  1. Just bought a domain; need help choosing a hosting option
  2. I just joined this forum so I could make better informed decisions about purchasing a domain - already did that - and possibly getting help with getting it up and running.
  3. I'm not exactly new at web development, but I've been on a sabbatical for several months and I'm finding that I might as well be starting at square 1.

  15. I bought my domain from porkbun.com after reading a recommendation here, it was cheap and included everything (some are still trying to charge separately for security certificates!!).
  16. Now I need to find a hosting company. A few I have looked at:
  17. - nixihost.com
  18. - veerotech.net
  19. - iwfhosting.net
  20. - knownhost.com
  21. Are those any good? How do I decide which one to use? All I need at the moment is a single domain hosted, with allowed subdomains, and email. I can build the website myself, but I will probably need some support once in a while. I had used name.com for hosting last time I had a website, a couple years ago, and their support was actually pretty awesome, but it seems their prices have gone way up.
  22. The purpose of my website is basically just to use as a portfolio to show my design work (3D drawings) and my very basic web apps. A single, multi-page static site.
  23. Forgive me if there is already a thread for this. I tried searching several different ways but I could not find anything. I was hoping to learn other's experiences with hosting companies, which ones had been proven trustworthy, had good support, etc.
  24. Thanks in advance!
  25. registration & hosting
  26. Also, I know it is recommended to keep registration and hosting separate.
  27. That being said, when you sign up for hosting, and they want you to transfer over your domain name, is that making them un-separate? I feel like that is probably a really dumb question, but I just now realized that maybe I have a misunderstanding of what that recommendation actually means. Should I choose the option "I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers"?
  28. Should I choose the option "I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers"?
  29. Yes. You are not transferring your domain or registering a new one with them with this option.
  30. I've only hosted with Knownhost for a short time, but their support has been fast, competent and professional so far.
  31. I know that there are a number of reviews of at least VeeroTech and KnownHost on these forums so might be worth doing a search to read feedback from some of their customers

  34. Did you try to search with their company or domain name? The providers you mentioned have several reviews here.

  38. You will have your story with any provider you decide to sign up with.
  39. If that fit your budget you can start with the company you like the most at the moment.
  40. Just leave an opportunity for yourself to change the host anytime you wish and do not pay upfront for many months ahead.

  43. Ideally though you do research before doing anything proper research can save a a lot of movement and headaches as i always say treat your host as you would a home search try to do enough research to know each company intimately dont be afraid to dive deep and ask the hard questions pick up the phone if necessity

  48. Well, sure, I can do that, but I just listed four completely random providers. This is no way to do proper research. Maybe this is the wrong forum for a generalized provider recommendation. I'm not even sure if I want to go with shared hosting or VPS.
  49. Veerotech is very good indeed. I've been with them since March last year, so arguably still relatively new with them, but they're solid and their support is excellent if you need it.

  53. Also that is important what you are hosting (web application) because sometimes web application itself can drive you crazy until you shift to another one.

  56. Yes, choose existing domain and only update the nameserver. If anything would to happen to your hosting company or hosting account, you’ll still have full control of your domain.
  57. Yeah I signed up last week to knownhost and they migrated my 7 sites within a few hours and responded to any questions quickly. Glad I did as I was with servint for 15 years, they sold out to leaseweb a few months back and they have been down all day today and their service status says it is going to be at least several more hours.
